2D Payment Gateway

Card checkout for merchants selling in Nigeria

A 2D payment gateway takes the card number, expiry date, and CVV. In Nigeria that card step sits beside NIP bank transfer, USSD, and a debit from a bank account. It does not replace those methods, and it does not mean every card payment skips a one-time password.

What shoppers can use at checkout

Cards

Paystack, SeerBit, and Gemspay all list debit and credit cards. The shopper enters the card details. If the issuing bank asks for a password, that step still appears.

Bank transfer

Paystack and SeerBit list bank transfer as its own method. BillBlend names NIP, the transfer system the Central Bank of Nigeria set up, as the rail Nigerians already use. A transfer is an account credit, not a CVV.

USSD and bank account

Gemspay and Paystack both name USSD. Paystack also lists bank account and POS. USSD is a code on the phone. A bank-account debit is a pull from the account. Neither one is a card form.

One integration

Paystack and SeerBit describe a single integration that can expose more than one method. The merchant still has to decide which methods to show. Adding USSD does not turn the card field into a transfer.

Card data and PCI DSS

BillBlend’s Nigeria page says payment gateways are expected to follow PCI DSS: encrypt card data, limit who can see it, and test the network. SeerBit describes itself as a PCI-DSS certified processor. Paystack describes automated and manual fraud checks aimed at chargebacks. Gemspay says it screens card payments and uses multi-factor authentication on the transaction flow.

Those controls are about protecting data and spotting fraud. They are not a published approval rate, and this page does not invent one. A card form without an OTP is easier to abuse when the card and CVV have leaked. Keep the fraud rules, and do not tell customers that every payment will skip the password.

BillBlend also lists encryption of the payment in transit, staff training on incidents, and 3-D Secure as an extra authentication layer that can stay on the checkout. SeerBit adds the point that one integration can cover online and in-person payments, with a dashboard for what customers bought. Paystack describes exports for accounting and reconciliation. Use the report to separate card sales from transfer credits. A blended total hides which rail failed.

Support is part of the same setup. BillBlend advertises round-the-clock help and a named contact on the page. Gemspay points new merchants to a registration flow. The practical question for a Nigerian business is who answers when a USSD session drops or a card is declined, and whether that person can see the reference for that payment. Ask for that path before you go live. Do not treat a marketing line about speed as a settlement promise.

How a business goes live

  1. Tell us the market, the model, and whether you already have a licence to operate. BillBlend’s onboarding sequence starts with a request, then a look at the project and the payment requirements.
  2. Connect once. Paystack and SeerBit both describe APIs for a website or app, plus simpler tools such as a payment link. Gemspay names wallets, cards, USSD, and bank transfer on the same platform.
  3. Test cards, transfers, and USSD as separate cases. A failed USSD session and a declined card are not the same incident.
  4. Go live, then watch settlement and disputes. Paystack points merchants to a dashboard for reconciliation. Someone on the team should be able to export a day’s payments without a developer.

NIP and USSD stay on their own rails

A card form that collects the number, expiry, and CVV does not collect an NIP transfer, and it does not dial a USSD code. NIP is the local transfer system named on BillBlend’s Nigeria page. USSD and bank-account debit are named by Paystack and Gemspay as separate choices. A merchant that offers all of them still has three confirmations: the card details, the transfer credit, and the phone session. The card form does not absorb the other two.

Questions before you connect

Will shoppers skip the OTP on every card?

No. The card form asks for the number, expiry, and CVV. If the issuer requires 3-D Secure, the one-time password still appears. Transfer and USSD use their own confirmation.

What is NIP doing in this checkout?

BillBlend describes NIP as the remittance system the Central Bank of Nigeria established. It is the transfer rail, not a second name for a card authorization.

Can the same integration show cards and USSD?

Paystack, SeerBit, and Gemspay describe more than one method behind one integration. You still choose which methods the shopper sees.

Do you publish a fee or an approval rate here?

No. Fee schedules and approval rates belong in a contract. This page does not copy another company’s price or invent one.
